Gooseberry & Lime Bar: A Wild Kenyan Memory, Re-imagined

Growing up in Kenya, gooseberries never came from a shop. They grew wild along footpaths and forest edges, hidden inside small papery husks we'd peel open with dirty fingers, popping the tart golden fruit straight into our mouths before we even knew what a "super-food" it was. That wild, un-planted memory is exactly what inspired our newest bar.

Most energy bars are built around just one or two ingredients, a nut here, a seed there. Our Gooseberry & Lime bar takes a different approach: 13 different plants working together, more than any other bar we make, delivering 5 g of protein and 3.4 g of fibre per 30 g. Being nut-free makes it a snack bar that almost anyone can grab, hike with or share.

13 plants, and every one earns its place. This bar is a complete protein, giving you all 9 essential amino acids. It's also packed with micro-nutrients including iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin E, and vitamin C plus healthy fats and slow-releasing carbs that keep your energy steady, not spiking and crashing.

Every one of these 13 plants comes from farmers we know by name. Take teff, the tiny ancient grain behind injera bread, so small that a hundred grains barely fill a wheat kernel, yet so nutrient-dense it punches well above its size. Ours is grown by smallholder farmers in Marsabit, and sourcing it from them means keeping that income, and that knowledge, within our own communities instead of shipping it in from elsewhere. Amaranth tells a similar story, an ancient grain now cultivated by local farmers across Kenya, its seed dense in complete protein and its cultivation a quiet act of food security for the families who grow it.

The same principle carries through the rest of the bar. Our pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chickpeas, oats, chia seeds, and coconut are all sourced from local growers, which means fresher ingredients for you and a steadier income for the farms behind them. Buying local isn't a footnote for us, it's the reason this bar tastes the way it does, and the reason 13 plants can share a shelf instead of one.

At the centre of it all sits the pairing that gives the bar its name. The gooseberries carry vitamin C and a natural tartness most people have never tasted outside a wild bush; the lime brightens that tartness and cuts through the earthiness of the grains beneath it, so every bite tastes fresh rather than heavy.  All in all, variety matters here, not just taste, a gut fed on many different plants rather than one or two is better fed, each plant brings its own fibre types and micro-nutrients that feed different corners of your gut, building the kind of diversity your gut micro-biome thrives on.

This is a bar built for movement, the one you tuck into a day pack before a hike, break open halfway up a trail, or grab on your way to a workout. But it's also a bar built for sharing. Made without a single nut, it's easy to pass around a family picnic, tuck into a lunchbox for your child, or offer a friend, a snack the whole table can dig into together. Thirteen plants, sourced from thirteen local stories, feeding your gut and giving you steady energy in every bite.

Grove & Meadow's Gooseberry & Lime, a wild Kenyan memory, grown by local hands, made to fuel yours.
